Parque Nacional Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo
Park Overview
Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo National Park is renowned for its extensive petrified forests, which are the park's main feature. These ancient fossilized remains date back to the Jurassic period, offering a unique window into prehistoric ecosystems. The park's landscape is characterized by its stark, arid beauty, with petrified tree trunks scattered across the desert terrain, some measuring up to 3 meters in diameter.
Covering an area of approximately 63,543 hectares, the park was established on December 13, 1954, as a natural monument and was later designated as a national park on September 27, 2012. It serves as a vital conservation area for the protection of these geological treasures and the steppe ecosystem. Visitors to the park can explore designated trails, observe the petrified remains, and learn about the natural history that led to the preservation of these ancient forests.
